Whenever I mention to people I’m a hypnotherapist people are always very curious about how it works and if I can make them do silly things. This is part 2 of my blog and here you will find a further 5 misconceptions around hypnotherapy. If you missed part 1, you can find it here.
6: Will I reveal secrets I don’t want you to know? This is not the case, hypnosis is not mind control and you are aware throughout the whole session.
7: Do I need to close my eyes to be hypnotised? This is not the case as hypnosis is merely a state of concentration so most people will close their eyes as its easier to relax but some may keep them open to start with and they might find that as they become more relaxed their eyes will naturally close.
8: Can I lie under hypnosis? The answer is yes – just as you could under normal circumstances if you chose too. Hypnosis cannot be used as lie detector but merely a technique to help relax and focus the mind.
9: If I am having a hypnosis session could I deal with an emergency? This is not true you would be able to act as you usually would in an emergency.
10: Does being hypnotised make you helpless? Certainly not! As mentioned hypnosis is a powerful technique to help make positive changes it does not sedate you or make you incapable of moving or speaking.
Hypnosis is something we all experience about twenty times a day. As a hypnotherapist, I have simply learned to help invoke the state and I understand how to use this state to help you achieve your goals.
I hope that this helps waylay any fears or worries you may have about hypnosis. If there’s still some niggling doubts or questions, please feel free to reach out either by sending me an email or using my new ‘live chat’ feature (in the bottom right of this page).
