Whenever I mention to people I’m a hypnotherapist people are always very curious about how it works and if I can make them do silly things. Here’s a list of the myths I hear most often and their explanations.
I always hear things like: will you make me do things I don’t want to do or can I get trapped in a trance. These types of questions are very common and often make me laugh, but because of this I wanted to share some common misconceptions around hypnotherapy and hopefully put your mind at rest.
1: Will I do or say things I wouldn’t usually? The answer to this is no, hypnosis is a perfectly relaxing state of mind but it is not mind control. You the client are always in control of the experience and cannot be made to do things you don’t feel comfortable with.
2: If I fall asleep during the session will I be stuck in a trance? This is a very common misconception and the answer is no absolutely not, hypnosis is a relaxed state of mind you will awaken feeling refreshed and relaxed and able to go about your day to day activities as normal.
3: Can hypnotherapy wipe out memories? No it can’t but it can help you deal with emotions that came from the memory and help you deal with them in a more constructive way.
4: Is hypnotherapy mind control? No absolutely not it’s not possible to take over someone else’s mind. Hypnotherapy is not magical it’s a type of therapy that has been used for hundreds of years and can help people during difficult times. Hypnotherapy uses the power of suggestion and visualization to help people achieve positive outcomes.
5: Hypnotherapy requires 12 or more sessions to be effective? No this is not the case, amount of sessions will depend upon the issue and the individual. Some people will get positive results after 2 or more sessions.
